Washington, DC – The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Forest Service announced the Ohio-Kentucky-Indiana Regional Council of Governments (OKI) as one of five recipients of its 2015 National Urban and Community Forestry Challenge Grants. OKI was awarded $194,770 over a two-year period (July 1, 2015 – June 2017) for its project aimed at utilizing green infrastructure to manage and mitigate stormwater to improve water quality.
“As a member of the Northern Kentucky Urban and Community Forestry Council, I am a strong advocate for urban forestry as an integral part of comprehensive planning,” said Mayor Sherry Carran of Covington, KY. “Stormwater is a problem for cities across the country, and, this important project will identify cost-effective opportunities for decreasing runoff and its hazardous effects.”
With this funding, OKI will lead a team of national partners to develop an “Integrating Trees into Stormwater Management Design and Policy Guide.” The guide will serve as a resource for local decision makers nationwide on how to promote, facilitate and increase the use of trees for stormwater management. The goal of the guide will be to reduce the widespread lack of understanding, acceptance and credibility of trees’ effectiveness in mitigating stormwater by presenting pragmatic solutions and best practices for including trees in stormwater facility design regulations and policies.
“While OKI does extensive work in transportation planning, this project highlights our multifaceted approach to regional planning,” said OKI Chief Executive Officer Mark Policinski. “The water quality and greenspace programs we manage intersect with our transportation planning to ensure the environment and development are served, equally.”
OKI is a council of local governments, business organizations and community groups committed to developing collaborative strategies, plans and programs to improve the quality of life and the economic development of the Tri-State.
