Hands Dirty, Feet Wet A modest proposal titled Hands Dirty, Feet Wet: Meet at the Creek won OKI a $4,650 grant from Ohio EPAs Rumpke Settlement Fund in September 1999. The fund distributes $70,000 annually from a fine paid by Rumpke Waste Removal and Recycling Systems. About 40 applicants submitted proposals last year; OKI was one of four to be chosen for funding. Hands Dirty, Feet Wet takes a hands-on approach to surface water quality surveillance and improvement. It has enabled OKI to acquire stream cleanup tools, boots and gloves, monitoring devices, a global positioning system, two-way radios, a microcassette recorder and a digital camera. The equipment is proving to be useful for field work along the Mill Creek, Great Miami River, Little Miami River, Tanners Creek and other waterways in the OKI region. |
