Smog doesn't just affect visibility. It affects our economy and more important, our health. Smog irritates our lung tissues, making it more difficult to breathe. This is particularly true with children, the elderly and those with respiratory problems such as asthma.
In our region, vehicle emissions are responsible for 44% of the smog produced. Industrial sources such as factories account for about 28% with consumer sources, such as gas-powered lawn equipment, oil-based paints and stains, and boats contributing another 28%. These pollutants are baked by the sunlight, creating the smog we see periodically when the air is stagnant.
